We were out at our family cabin in Bolinas, and he was at the kitchen table close to tears, surrounded by binder paper and pencils and unopened books on birds, immobilized by the hugeness of the task ahead. Then my father sat down beside him, put his arm around my brother’s shoulder, and said, “Bird by bird, buddy. Just take it bird by bird.” page 19.

Marvelously wise and best of all, great reading.

I love this book. If you are a writer or want to be a writer, this is helpful.
The book is also inspirational.

  2. I’ve been wanting to read something by Anne Lamott for a while now. I don’t want to write a book, so I guess this shouldn’t be a good starting point, but your teaser made me realise she writes really well and I should hurry up and get one of her books soon.

    Whilst not a non fiction reader myself, this probably wouldn’t be a book I was rushing to read. However, despite that, I can appreciate some sound advice and good writing, so thanks for sharing those words.

    We are in more or less the same situation as youself, so I can appreciate the emotional turmoil you must be going through right now and I can only hope that this book, amongst other things, can help you get things into some order and perspective, as you move forward with your life.

  8. I love that advice – it’s the same as when I tell my kids to “break it into chunks … one chunk at a time”. (Also the same way I eat chocolate).
