Saturday Steals 1/18/14

I have some wonderful books to recommend with fantastic pricing.

The Rosie Project: A Novel By Graeme Simison. The E-book is a STEAL at $1.99. Hardcover is $15.95 and paperback $12.31.
Meet Don Tillman, a brilliant yet socially challenged professor of genetics, who’s decided it’s time he found a wife. And so, in the orderly, evidence-based manner with which Don approaches all things, he designs the Wife Project to find his perfect partner: a sixteen-page, scientifically valid survey to filter out the drinkers, the smokers, the late arrivers.

Rosie Jarman is all these things. She also is strangely beguiling, fiery, and intelligent. And while Don quickly disqualifies her as a candidate for the Wife Project, as a DNA expert Don is particularly suited to help Rosie on her own quest: identifying her biological father. When an unlikely relationship develops as they collaborate on the Father Project, Don is forced to confront the spontaneous whirlwind that is Rosie—and the realization that, despite your best scientific efforts, you don’t find love, it finds you.

Arrestingly endearing and entirely unconventional, Graeme Simsion’s distinctive debut will resonate with anyone who has ever tenaciously gone after life or love in the face of great challenges. The Rosie Project is a rare find: a book that restores our optimism in the power of human connection.
When I Found You  By Catherine Ryan Hyde. A STEAL! E-book is normally $9.99 now available for $1.99. As a lover of author, I read this book when it was released and yes, I recommend!
While duck hunting one morning, childless, middle-aged Nathan McCann finds a newborn abandoned in the woods. To his shock, the child—wrapped in a sweater and wearing a tiny knitted hat—is still alive. To his wife’s shock, Nathan wants to adopt the boy…but the child’s grandmother steps in. Nathan makes her promise, however, that one day she’ll bring the boy to meet him so he can reveal that he was the one who rescued him.

Fifteen years later, the widowered Nathan discovers the child abandoned once again—this time at his doorstep. Named Nat, the teenager has grown into a sullen delinquent whose grandmother can no longer tolerate him. Nathan agrees to care for Nat, and the two engage in a battle of wills that spans years. Still, the older man repeatedly assures the youngster that, unlike the rest of the world, he will never abandon him—not even when Nat suffers a trauma that changes both of their lives forever.
From the bestselling author of Pay It Forward: A Novel  comes When I Found You , an exquisite, emotional tale of the unexpected bonds that nothing in life can break.
Following Atticus  By Tom Ryan. Another STEAL at $1.99. You know as an animal and dog lover I can’t pass this one by.
The remarkable true story of a man and a dog embarking on the challenge of a lifetime. This is author Tom Ryan’s inspiring tale of how he and his miniature schnauzer companion, the “Little Buddha” Atticus M. Finch, attempted to scale all forty-eight of New Hampshire’s four thousand foot White Mountains twice in the dead of winter.
It is a story of love, loss, and the resilience of the human and animal spirit that’s as thrilling as Into Thin Air  and featuring the most endearing and unforgettable canine protagonist since Marley & Me – also a STEAL at $1.99.
We the Animals: A novel
By Justin Torres. This book is in my TBR. Normal E-book price of $12.95 is now a STEAL for $2.99.
Amazon Best Books of the Month, September 2011: We the Animals, Justin Torres’s sparse debut novel–at just 125 pages–is brimming with delicate stories of family, of growing up, of facing reality, and of delaying it. Narrated by the youngest son of a Puerto Rican father and white mother from Brooklyn raising their three young sons in upstate New York, the novel is comprised of vignettes detailing moments spent in the eye of the ferocious bubble of home. Torres paints a large picture through diminutive strokes, evoking envy for the couple’s passion and fear for just how easily that passion turns to rage. The brothers wrestle, fight, cry, and laugh as their family is torn and repaired over and over again. Torres’s prose is fierce, grabbing hold of the reader and allowing him inside the wrenching, whirlwind of a life lived intensely. —Alexandra Foster

Shut Up and Kiss Me  By Carolyn Hughley. Normally $2.9, now a STEAL at $.99. We all need to read some romance and with a great title Shut Up and Kiss Me how can your pass this book up?

Ellana Licari, a hopeless romantic, has her sights set on the tall, dark, and handsome chef Nick Soranno. With the help of the two meddling mamas, she’s determined to show him she’s ‘The One’ not that scrawny redhead who’s rapidly becoming more than his casual ‘flavor of the month.’

Still Life with Bread Crumbs: A Novel  By Anna Quindlen. Available January 28, 2014.

Still Life with Bread Crumbs begins with an imagined gunshot and ends with a new tin roof. Between the two is a wry and knowing portrait of Rebecca Winter, a photographer whose work made her an unlikely heroine for many women. There she discovers, in a tree stand with a roofer named Jim Bates, that what she sees through a camera lens is not all there is to life.
Brilliantly written, powerfully observed, Still Life with Bread Crumbs is a deeply moving and often very funny story of unexpected love, and a stunningly crafted journey into the life of a woman, her heart, her mind, her days, as she discovers that life is a story with many levels, a story that is longer and more exciting than she ever imagined.

The Last Wicked Scoundrel: A Scoundrels of St. James Novella book available now. Paper back available January 28, 2014.

I LOVE Lorraine Heath. She is an excellent writer and person. The very first books I read Always To Remember and The Texas Trilogy series turned me into a huge fan. Books Available for Pre-Order 1/20/14

More books available for Pre Order. So many books I cannot wait to read! Let me know what you are looking forward to, which books you are waiting impatiently to read.

Under the Wide and Starry Sky: A NovelBy Nancy Horan. Available January 21, 2014.  I can’t wait for this one!
New York Times bestselling author of Loving Frank, comes her much-anticipated second novel, which tells the improbable love story of Scottish writer Robert Louis Stevenson and his tempestuous American wife, Fanny.
At the age of thirty-five, Fanny Van de Grift Osbourne has left her philandering husband in San Francisco to set sail for Belgium—with her three children and nanny in tow—to study art. It is a chance for this adventurous woman to start over, to make a better life for all of them, and to pursue her own desires.  Not long after her arrival, however, tragedy strikes, and Fanny and her children repair to a quiet artists’ colony in France where she can recuperate. Emerging from a deep sorrow, she meets a lively Scot, Robert Louis Stevenson, ten years her junior, who falls instantly in love with the earthy, independent, and opinionated “belle Americaine.”

Fanny does not immediately take to the slender young lawyer who longs to devote his life to writing—and who would eventually pen such classics as Treasure Island and The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. In time, though, she succumbs to Stevenson’s charms, and the two begin a fierce love affair—marked by intense joy and harrowing darkness—that spans the decades and the globe. The shared life of these two strong-willed individuals unfolds into an adventure as impassioned and unpredictable as any of Stevenson’s own unforgettable tales.

Award winning Oats has authored over 70 novels. Her latest offering  plunges us deep into the psyche of a wounded young corporal haunted by unspeakable acts of wartime aggression, while unraveling the story of a disaffected young girl whose exile from her family may have come long before her disappearance.

His Day Is Done: A Nelson Mandela Tribute By Maya Angelou. Available January 21, 2014.
He was a son of Africa who became father to a nation and, for billions of people around the world, a beacon of hope, courage, and perseverance in the face of opposition. Now, acclaimed poet Maya Angelou honors the life and remarkable soul of Nelson Mandela, former president of South Africa and Nobel laureate.
In His Day is Done, Angelou delivers an authentically heartfelt and elegant tribute to Mandela, who stood as David to the mighty Goliath of Apartheid and who, after twenty-seven years of unjust imprisonment on the notorious Robben Island, emerged with “His stupendous heart intact / His gargantuan will / Hale and hearty” to lead his people into a new era.

This poignant work of gratitude and remembrance offers condolences to the resilient people of South Africa on the loss of their beloved “Madiba” and celebrates a man like no other, whose life and work changed the world.

Snowblind  By Christopher Golden. E-book is available January 16, 2014. Hardback releases January 21, 2014.
In Christopher Golden’s first horror novel in more than a decade—a work reminiscent of early Stephen King—Snowblind updates the ghost story for the modern age.
The small New England town of Coventry had weathered a thousand blizzards . . . but never one like this. Icy figures danced in the wind and gazed through children’s windows with soul-chilling eyes. People wandered into the whiteout and were never seen again. Families were torn apart, and the town would never be the same.
Now, as a new storm approaches twelve years later, the folks of Coventry are haunted by the memories of that dreadful blizzard and those who were lost in the snow. Photographer Jake Schapiro mourns his little brother, Isaac, even as—tonight—another little boy is missing. Mechanic and part-time thief Doug Manning’s life has been forever scarred by the mysterious death of his wife, Cherie, and now he’s starting over with another woman and more ambitious crimes. Police detective Joe Keenan has never been the same since that night, when he failed to save the life of a young boy . . . and the boy’s father vanished in the storm only feet away. And all the way on the other side of the country, Miri Ristani receives a phone call . . . from a man who died twelve years ago.
As old ghosts trickle back, this new storm will prove to be even more terrifying than the last. Spellbinding in scope and rooted deeply in classic storytelling, Christopher Golden has written a chilling masterpiece that is the best work of his career and a standout supernatural thriller. With richly textured characters, scarred and haunted by the ghosts of those they loved most, Snowblind is rooted deeply in classic storytelling. Christopher Golden has written a chilling masterpiece that is both his breakout book and a standout supernatural thriller.
The Secret of Magic  By Deborah Johnson. Available January 21, 2014.
In 1946, a young female attorney from New York City attempts the impossible: attaining justice for a black man in the Deep South.
Regina Robichard works for Thurgood Marshall, who receives an unusual letter asking the NAACP to investigate the murder of a returning black war hero. It is signed by M. P. Calhoun, the most reclusive author in the country.

As a child, Regina was captivated by Calhoun’s The Secret of Magic, a novel in which white and black children played together in a magical forest. Once down in Mississippi, Regina finds that nothing in the South is as it seems. She must navigate the muddy waters of racism, relationships, and her own tragic past. The Secret of Magic brilliantly explores the power of stories and those who tell them.

First Love  By James Patterson. Available January 13, 2014. (by the end of the month most of us should know what year it is and won’t need the reminder.)
Axi Moore is a “good girl”: She studies hard, stays out of the spotlight, and doesn’t tell anyone that what she really wants is to run away from it all. The only person she can tell is her best friend, Robinson–who she also happens to be madly in love with.

When Axi impulsively invites Robinson to come with her on an unplanned cross-country road trip, she breaks the rules for the first time in her life. But the adventure quickly turns from carefree to out-of-control.

A remarkably moving tale with its origins in James Patterson’s own past, First Love is testament to the power of first love–and how it can change the rest of your life.

If you can’t wait Amazon has First Love — Free Preview — The First 12 Chapters
The Night Before My Birthday  by Natasha Wing and illustrator Amy Wummer. Available January 13, 2014.

The Night Before My Birthday captures all the excitement and anticipation that every child experiences in the lead-up to their special day. The decorations are up, the table is set, and the food is ready – but what happens when there is an ice cream emergency? Once again Natasha Wing has written a story that is sure to appeal to every child getting ready for a birthday. The book is told by and seen through the eyes of the birthday child, so it is gender neutral and a fun gift for any birthday girl or boy.

And I also found another Children’s book of the same title I wanted to share. How marvelous to create a tradition with a beautiful book. And we all have Hurty Feelings, right?

The Night Before My Birthday Book  by Joni Rubinstein.

“The moon will soon rise, and the sun has just set. But it’s still not my birthday yet.” The Night Before My Birthday Book is a magical poem read to children on the night before their birthday. It captures the feelings of children as they are tucked into bed, full of anticipation, with dreams of waking up a brand new age. This beautifully illustrated book, now in hardcover, becomes a childhood keepsake with chronicle pages to record birthday dreams come true. The Night Before My Birthday Book will become a favorite tradition as it celebrates the birth of a child and becoming a growing family.

“The moon will soon rise, and the sun has just set. But it’s still not my birthday yet.”

Hurty Feelings (Laugh-Along Lessons) By Helen Lester and illustrator Lynn Munsinger. Hardcover available January 14, 2014. This book was released in paperback in 2007 but is now available in Hardback.

Fragility the hippo is solid on the outside and fragile on the inside. In every compliment, Fragility hears an insult. If someone says she looks nice, she hears that she looks like a big, squishy cupcake—since cupcakes are also nice. But soon, Rudy the bully comes along to insult her for real. In the face of these insults, will Fragility realize the difference between a jab and a compliment?

Mrs. Lincoln’s Rival  By Jennifer Chiaverini. Available January 14, 2014.

Kate Chase Sprague was born in 1840 in Cincinnati, Ohio, the second daughter to the second wife of a devout but ambitious lawyer. Her father, Salmon P. Chase, rose to prominence in the antebellum years and was appointed secretary of the treasury in Abraham Lincoln’s cabinet, while aspiring to even greater heights.
Beautiful, intelligent, regal, and entrancing, young Kate Chase stepped into the role of establishing her thrice-widowed father in Washington society and as a future presidential candidate. Her efforts were successful enough that The Washington Star declared her “the most brilliant woman of her day. None outshone her.”

None, that is, but Mary Todd Lincoln. Though Mrs. Lincoln and her young rival held much in common—political acumen, love of country, and a resolute determination to help the men they loved achieve greatness—they could never be friends, for the success of one could come only at the expense of the other. When Kate Chase married William Sprague, the wealthy young governor of Rhode Island, it was widely regarded as the pinnacle of Washington society weddings. President Lincoln was in attendance. The First Lady was not.

Jennifer Chiaverini excels at chronicling the lives of extraordinary yet little known women through historical fiction. What she did for Elizabeth Keckley in Mrs. Lincoln’s Dressmaker and for Elizabeth Van Lew in The Spymistress she does for Kate Chase Sprague in Mrs. Lincoln’s Rival.

For the Benefit of Those Who See: Dispatches from the World of the Blind By Rosemary Mahoney. Available January 14, 2014.

“Rosemary Mahoney is one of a handful of nonfiction writers so original and so surprising that I look forward to each new book with an excitement bordering on impatience.  What makes For the Benefit of Those Who See especially absorbing is that it turns on Mahoney’s greatest strength: her idiosyncratic and unblinking eye.  As it explores the world of the blind, this provocative and revelatory work teaches us a great deal about what it means to see.  And when I finished this book, I returned to the world feeling that all my senses had been sharpened.” — George Howe Colt, author of The Big House

Annoying Orange #4: Tales from the Crisper By Scott Shaw and Mike Kazaleh. Available January 14, 2014.

Don’t adjust your television; that really is a talking orange and he really is that annoying! Annoying Orange and his friends from the fruit bowl have already taken over the airwaves and the internet with their groaningly silly adventures, and now it’s time for them to scare the seeds out of you in this bumper crop of horrific pulpy parodies. Gather ’round the campfire (not so close, Marshmallow!) and join your host, Annoying Orange, for an evening of…Tales From the Crisper!

Mayhem By Sarah Pinborough.  Available January 14, 2014. “A compulsively readable story that starts as a conventional murder mystery and morphs, by degrees, into a horrifying supernatural thriller,” The Guardian said of Mayhem.

A virtuoso fantasy writer, Sarah Pinborough has won numerous awards including the British Fantasy Award for Best Short Story. In Mayhem Pinborough turns her attention to one of the most baffling and notorious crime sprees in Victorian times.

Already frustrated in their attempts to capture serial murderer Jack the Ripper, the detectives of Scotland Yard are suddenly confronted with a new monster, dubbed the Torso Killer for his habit of leaving behind neatly wrapped parcels of his victims’ body parts, minus the heads. With the terrible increase in mutilated corpses to examine, the highly regarded police surgeon Dr. Thomas Bond has lost the ability to sleep. True, a growing dependency on opium affords him some solace in his loneliest and most desperate hours, but he also fears the grip of the drug.

During Dr. Bond’s nightly tours of London’s underbelly in search of pharmaceutical respite from the horrors that plague him by day, he encounters a mysterious Jesuit priest scouring the opium dens himself, clearly in search of someone—or something. The doctor at first rejects the strange priest’s unnatural theories about the Torso Killer as an affront to scientific thought. But over time Dr. Bond’s opium-addled mind begins to crumble under the growing impression that there might be some awful truth to the Jesuit’s ideas.

As the police struggle to capture two serial killers, the troubled forensics expert begins to suspect that he may actually know the Torso Killer personally. If he is right, Dr. Bond will need all the strength he can muster to save his small circle of loved ones from falling victim to the bloody depravities of this twisted creature.

Welcome to 2014 my friends. Time flies so it is Time to get reading.  Here are the upcoming books I recommend.
Return to Tradd Street  By Karen White. Available January 7, 2014.
Melanie is only going through the motions of living since refusing Jack’s marriage proposal. She misses him desperately, but her broken heart is the least of her problems. Despite an insistence that she can raise their child alone, Melanie is completely unprepared for motherhood, and she struggles to complete renovations on her house on Tradd Street before the baby arrives.
When Melanie is roused one night by the sound of a ghostly infant crying, she chooses to ignore it. She simply does not have the energy to deal with one more crisis. That is, until the remains of a newborn buried in an old christening gown are found hidden in the foundation of her house.
As the hauntings on Tradd Street slowly become more violent, Melanie decides to find out what caused the baby’s untimely death, uncovering the love, loss, and betrayal that color the house’s history—and threaten her claim of ownership. But can she seek Jack’s help without risking her heart? For in revealing the secrets of the past, Melanie also awakens the malevolent presence that has tried to keep the truth hidden for decades.

I cannot wait for this release, I preordered 4 months ago! I love Karen White and the next novel in the Tradd Street series follows The House on Tradd Street, The Girl On Legare Street (Tradd Street) and The Strangers on Montagu Street (Tradd Street).  You don’t have to start at the beginning but what fun to read a series! So I recommend buying The House on Tradd Street.

Calling all Charlaine Harris Lovers. This woman can write and I have never been disappointed in any of her books. Recently she has begun working with other authors AND Ms. Harris has a new book releasing in May! I cannot recommend Charlaine Harris enough and while I don’t read many graphic novels, I must try her new offering below.  Other Recommendations follow.

Cemetery Girl: Book One: The Pretenders (The Cemetery Girl Trilogy)  By Charlaine Harris and Christopher Golden with artwork by Don Kramer. Available January 7, 2014.

She calls herself Calexa Rose Dunhill—names taken from the grim surroundings where she awoke, bruised and bloody, with no memory of who she is, how she got there, or who left her for dead. She has made the cemetery her home, living in a crypt and avoiding human contact. But Calexa can’t hide from the dead—and because she can see spirits, they can’t hide from her.

Then one night, Calexa spies a group of teenagers vandalizing a grave—and watches in horror as they commit murder. As the victim’s spirit rises from her body, it flows into Calexa, overwhelming her mind with visions and memories not her own. Now Calexa must make a decision: continue to hide to protect herself—or come forward to bring justice to the sad spirit who has reached out to her for help.
Midnight Crossroad (A Novel of Midnight, Texas)  By Charlaine Harris. Available May 6 2014. You might as well order this now, I have.

Welcome to Midnight, Texas, a town with many boarded-up windows and few full-time inhabitants, located at the crossing of Witch Light Road and Davy Road. It’s a pretty standard dried-up western town.

There’s a pawn shop (someone lives in the basement and is seen only at night). There’s a diner (people who are just passing through tend not to linger). And there’s new resident Manfred Bernardo, who thinks he’s found the perfect place to work in private (and who has secrets of his own).

Stop at the one traffic light in town, and everything looks normal. Stay awhile, and learn the truth.

Teacup Turbulence (A Pet Rescue Mystery)  By Linda O. Johnston. Available January 7, 2014. Los Angeles animal shelter manager Lauren Vancouver has a soft spot for animals in need—and a keen eye for crime.

Thanks to a savvy ad campaign featuring teacup pups sporting HotPets Bling—a new line of faux jewelry dog collars—small dog adoptions have skyrocketed across the city.

So when Lauren discovers a shelter in the Midwest with more toy dogs than it can handle, she arranges a private plane to swoop in and fly the pups back to LA.

But Lauren didn’t count on rescue worker Teresa Kantrim coming along for the ride. Teresa has cared for the dogs since they were found and doesn’t trust anyone from La-La Land to take over the job. Her biting comments clearly haven’t earned Teresa any new friends, but when she turns up murdered, it’s time for Lauren to dig into Teresa’s past and find out who wanted her put down.

Erased (Altered)  By Jennifer Rush. Available January 7, 2014. They thought they had escaped. They were wrong.

After fleeing the Branch with Sam, Cas, and Nick, Anna is trying to make sense of the memories resurfacing from her old life. At the same time, she’s learning how to survive in hiding, following Sam’s rules: Don’t draw attention to yourself. Always carry a weapon. Know your surroundings. Watch your back.

This young adult book is a sequel to Altered.  Everything about Anna’s life is a secret. Her father works for the Branch, at the helm of its latest project: monitoring and administering treatments to the four genetically altered boys in the lab below their farmhouse. The boys escape and take Anna hostage.

Blind to the Bones: A Cooper & Fry Mystery  By Stephen Booth. Available as an E-book January 7, 2014.

I came across this book when I was doing my new release search. The book is part of a 15 book series and this book is number 4 originally released in Hardcover 9/23/2003 by Scribner,Paperback 12/6/2003 by Harper and Mass Market paperback 6/27/2006 by Bantam. The E-book release is through Harper Collins Witness Impulse line. I may start posting many new E-book releases of backlists now available. An entire world of ‘new’ authors for readers.

Also, my interest was piqued by this information and as I researched I found fodder for another blog post. When completed I will post the link here.

Standup Guy (Stone Barrington)  by Stuart Woods. Available January 7, 2014. Stone Barrington’s newest client does not seem the type to bring mayhem in his wake.
